Genes 'play a role in male hair loss'

Published: 29th of June 2010
Genes `play a role in male hair loss` Genes can affect the tendency of men to suffer from hair loss, it has been noted.

According to a Martinsburg Journal article by Dr Joseph De Soto, male-pattern baldness - which is also referred to as androgenic alopecia - affects two out of three men at some stage of their lives.

Despite its name, the NHS points out the condition can be suffered by women too and it is the most common form of thinning locks.

Dr De Soto stated that the initial signs of the condition are often a receding frontal and lateral hairline.

Eventually, tresses are shed from above the temples on the front and top of the head.

Other factors that can increase the likelihood that someone will suffer from a thinning of their locks include stress, dietary problems and medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, he claimed.

In addition, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can have this impact, the expert said.
