Maidenhead woman faces hair loss for charity
Published: 18th of January 2012
One woman has shaved her head to raise money for a cancer charity, stating hair loss may be a good symbol to support individuals with the disease. The Maidenhead Advertiser spoke to local resident of the Berkshire town Catriona West, who had her locks removed on Monday (January 16th).
"I just thought that when someone has cancer a lot of people lose their hair through their treatment, so it's quite topical and shows support in that way," she told the news provider.
The 40-year-old sacrificed what was described as a "trademark" orange style, although she has been keen on dyeing her tresses for years and it has been many colours before its recent hue.
Ms West decided to go through with the shave after her friend was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year, the publication noted.
It is not only people who develop tumours that could experience medically-related thinning hair and baldness, as the autoimmune condition alopecia areata also leaves people with fewer tresses.
