Hair loss in adolescent girls 'should warrant a trip to the doctor'
Published: 22nd of June 2011
Female hair loss is known to affect women as they go through the menopause, pregnancy and childbirth, but the problem is not limited to older women as adolescent girls can go bald too.Skin & Allergy News reported on recent comments made by Dr Seth Orlow at a Florida Society for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery conference that young girls presenting with this symptom should be checked for polycystic ovary syndrome.
The expert, who is New York University's chair of dermatology and professor of paediatric dermatology, cell biology and paediatrics, said hair loss in young women warrants medical investigation.
"In a girl who presents with early-onset androgenetic alopecia, think about early presentation of PCOS. It's definitely worth it to test them," the news provider quoted him as saying.
Female hair loss is one of the signs that can indicate the presence of cysts on the ovaries and sufferers should be checked for high levels of free and total testosterone in their system to aid diagnosis of the disorder, the doctor advised.
Another condition that can cause balding in young girls is alopecia areata, which causes tresses to fall out in chunks and can progress to alopecia universalis – the death of strands all over the body.
