Is there a link between male hair loss and prostate cancer?
Published: 30th of September 2010
Those struggling with male hair loss may be slightly less likely to contract prostate cancer, a healthcare professional has noted. In a piece for AOL News, Dr Basir Tareen noted that when he became a urologist, he was not expecting conversations with many of his patients regarding male pattern balding.
He observed that a drug used for the disease, known as finasteride, has also been used in very small doses to increase thinning strands, although stressed that this is not necessarily a good reason to take it.
Dr Tareen explained that studies have shown that balding men have a higher incidence of prostate cancer among themselves; however, the earlier this hair loss sets in, the less likely the sufferer is to contract the cancer.
It may be worth noting that a healthy lifestyle - including good nutrition, exercise, avoiding stress and plenty of vitamins - has been cited by professionals as a way of reducing chances of getting cancer and experiencing hair loss, so it could be that this is the best course of action for most men.
