Sufferer says female hair loss is isolating
Published: 29th of September 2010
A woman suffering from female hair loss has spoken out about how isolating the condition is.A piece in the Irish Independent quotes Vivienne McIntyre as saying she had a "great head of hair" before she woke up one morning to find her tresses thinning - although this did not happen overnight. Rather, the 52-year-old noticed strands coming out on her pillow, in the shower and on her brush.
Despite visiting several doctors, the mum of two found no answers until she eventually saw a specialised trichologist who diagnosed her with two sorts of alopecia, with the hair loss triggered by both the menopause and the departure of her kids for university.
Hormonal changes, such as menopause and pregnancy, are known culprits for inciting female hair loss.
"As a woman, I've lost my sense of femininity. My husband reassures me how I look makes no difference to him, but how you view yourself changes," Ms McIntyre added.
