Female hair loss 'caused by trauma'
Published: 27th of September 2010
Female hair loss can be caused by a whole host of factors - but one of the more common could be a life-changing event.According to a piece published on Boston.com, a stressful period - such as pregnancy, a bad illness or a crash diet - has been known to cause follicles to stop short in their regeneration process, meaning many more strands fall out at once.
General stress is also known to be behind the condition, with those with high levels of anxiety often reporting bald patches.
Eventually the cells should regroup and pass back into a more well-established cycle.
And the primary reason behind thinning locks is generally genetic - or androgenetic alopecia - which will see tresses grow sparse and diffuse over the entire scalp, often after hormonal crashes such as menopause.
Lynne Goldberg, professor of dermatology and director of the Hair Clinic at Boston Medical Center, told the publication that the best course of action in such a situation is to see a medical professional.
