Daughter's hair loss drives mother into politics
Published: 27th of September 2010
Democrat Valerie Longhurst - who is one of this year's candidates for Delaware's House of Representatives - has said it was her daughter's hair loss experiences that convinced her to become involved in politics.According to the Delaware News Journal, the lack of assistance she received regarding her child's thinning hair from elected state officials drove her to run for the 15th district seat in 2002.
Although Ms Longhurst lost out to incumbent Bruce Reynolds, she ran once more in 2004 and beat him by 28 votes.
Then, in 2008, she secured 47 per cent of the support to celebrate a win over Laura Brown - and one of her first bills, which became law in that same year, made it a requirement for insurance companies to pay for full-scalp prostheses and wigs for those experiencing hair loss, which according to guide Helium can be caused by a vitamin A deficiency.
