Parents of children with hair loss 'may struggle'

Published: 20th of September 2010
Parents of children with hair loss `may struggle` Parents of children experiencing hair loss can struggle to help their child keep their confidence levels up.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, mothers and fathers often feel helpless when their little one is diagnosed with conditions such as autoimmune disease alopecia, which causes patchy hairlessness all over the body.

"You're supposed to fix everything for your child," Flora Poloway - mother of ten-year-old Alex - said.

On this note, Jeff and Betsy Woytovich begam the Children's Alopecia Project after they found that their daughter Maddie had few avenues of support after she developed the illness in 2004.

The group concentrates on ensuring that confidence and improved self-image are instilled into every member through initiatives such as the Camp Alopeciapalooza.

"Self-esteem is first and foremost," Ms Woytovich added.

And Maddie, now 12, seems to agree - she told the newspaper that she refuses to wear a wig to cover her bald head, stating "this is who I am".

Those with alopecia or similar conditions in the UK might find that searching for specialised support in their area could be helpful. Other potentially beneficial paths to explore could include visiting a specialist hair loss clinic, as recommended recently by Joe magazine.
