Extensions and weaves 'can lead to hair loss'
Published: 15th of September 2010
Traction alopecia and thinning hair can result from years of wearing tightly-fixed weaves, braids and extensions, an expert has warned.Although treatments on the current market can help to encourage regrowth, those who experience hair loss because of the aforementioned reasons may also want to take a break from putting their locks under too much pressure.
According to a recent article in the Jamaica Observer, Naomi Campbell is one famous face who has suffered from traction alopecia.
But Dr Neil Perdasingh, a skin specialist, explained that she is not alone.
"A lot of black women suffer from it and this is due to how they style their hair - they pull their hair back and it pulls on the root of the hair and the hair comes out," he added, going on to say that many of his patients who used extensions for a long time now have thinning or no strands where the attachments were.
Dr Perdasingh's comments come a couple of months after shots of Campbell with noticeable bald patches were made public.
