Hair loss "increasingly common" in women
Published: 14th of September 2010
Female hair loss is "increasingly common" these days, due to a range of external factors. This suggestion, recently given in an article for the Daily Mail, linked thinning hair to modern-day pressures such as crash dieting, iron deficiency, medications and post-pregnancy hormones.
However, it is the social demand on women to be wife, mother and homemaker that causes extra stress and can, in some cases, lead to hair loss, said trichologist Dr Bessam Farjo.
In addition, those whose parents experienced thinning hair may be at risk.
"Think hair loss is a condition that only affects men, or women as they hit menopause? Think again," the article stated.
Psychologist Linda Papadopolous's view - that our culture sees hair as a representation of sexual attractiveness and womanhood - was also included in the piece. She said it is one of the largest factors governing self-esteem.
Dr Papadopolous's book on body image is entitled Mirror Mirror and she is also the resident psychologist for female-focused publication Cosmopolitan.
