"Aggressive dieting" a cause of female hair loss?
Published: 10th of September 2010
"Aggressive dieting" has been cited as a potential cause of female hair loss, reinforcing the fact that a balanced nutritional intake is crucial for healthy tresses.Writing for the website Helium, Ville Farah explained that some of the minerals, vitamins and proteins found in various foods are important "building blocks" of hair and, without them, strands become weak and damaged.
However, she also noted that female hair loss can result from periods of intense stress or anxiety - and the American Hair Loss Association explained these can include events such as major surgery or a severe infection.
"About six weeks to three months after the stressful event is usually when the phenomenon called telogen effluvium can begin," it added.
While most cases like this are temporary - as long as the person does not repeatedly endure such situations - some women experience ongoing hair loss without any recognisable trigger.
