Female hair loss after pregnancy is normal, expert says
Published: 9th of September 2010
An expert has reiterated that losing a seemingly large amount of hair after having a baby is very common and new mums should not be overly concerned.Dr Machelle M Seibel is the founder of HealthRock and explained why elevated hormones during pregnancy often cause tresses to grow at a faster rate.
However, after delivery, some women become slightly alarmed at the number of strands they lose every day.
Dr Seibel explained that this is because the body has hardly shed any for nine months and it is therefore "making up for lost time".
"Generally this change is temporary," she added.
Many experts agree that although post-natal hair loss is not permanent, it is very important to maintain a healthy and well-balanced diet - as well as consider supplements - to aid the body in returning to normal and keep skin, hair and nails in tip-top condition.
The comments come days after Gail Porter discussed her battle with alopecia universalis, which means she had no hair, eyebrows, eyelashes or strands anywhere else on her body.
Speaking to the Guardian, she said she was surprised nine months ago when it started growing back - these days she wears it in a pixie-style crop.
