Mother reveals hair loss struggle in midst of sleep catastrophe
Published: 31st of August 2010
A mother has revealed that the stress of her son's sleep problems caused her to experience hair loss.Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Jane Birtwistle said that little Joshua was unable and unwilling to sleep through the night from when he was born until he was around four years of age.
The youngster became hyperactive, destructive and even tried to make himself sick in an effort to stay awake, she said.
"It got so bad I even developed alopecia which I am sure was down to the long-term sleep deprivation," Ms Birtwistle added.
Eventually she and husband Richard enlisted the services of sleep therapist Jo Tabiner to work out some techniques that would help Joshua switch off.
"This has changed our lives. I feel like Jo has given us our lives back," the mother concluded.
Although the circumstances of Ms Birtwistle's story is unusual, stress and anxiety are known to be triggers for alopecia, for which there is no known cure.
However, writing for the New York Times recently, Dr Maria Hordinsky cautioned against believing this to be fact without any scientific evidence.
