Dermatologists 'help with hair loss'
Published: 27th of August 2010
Dermatologists may be the best port of call for patchy hair loss that appears without warning. This is according to Dr Peter Gott, answering readers' queries on GoErie.com.
The professional responded to one person's enquiry about their son's sudden bald patch which appears and reappears cyclically in larger forms.
Although the patient had at first been diagnosed with stress-related alopecia, Dr Gott explained that this is an autoimmune condition unlikely to be causing the problem, although he did concede that the subject should address issues of stress in their work and personal life to defeat this.
However, it is possible that the bald patch has been spurred by a scalp infection such as ringworm, he continued.
"A specific diagnosis can be made through scalp scrapings and other methods. Your son may have a hormonal or medical disorder," the physician declared, advising the scribe to take their child to the dermatologist.
His comments come as Dr Maria Hordinsky wrote a piece for the New York Times that asserted there is little evidence that stress causes hair loss.
