Stress 'does not necessarily cause hair loss'
Published: 27th of August 2010
An expert has declared that stress has not been definitively linked with hair loss.Writing for the New York Times, Dr Maria Hordinsky - a dermatologist from the University of Minnesota - said that while anxiety and life crises are often associated with thinning locks related to alopecia areata.
However, this is not always the case and nerve cells in the follicles are the real causes behind baldness.
Furthermore, better research needs to be done into whether the nervous system has any relation to factors that may cause hair to fall out, Dr Hordinsky continued.
"Identification and understanding of nerve, neuropeptide and receptor function in alopecia will lead to improved understanding," she added.
Despite her views, the expert did concede that there may be some link between the areas, which may explain why hair loss is said to be caused by anxiety.
Her comments come as a piece on EmpowHer insisted that stress is the "number-one" reason as to why tresses can thin and eventually fall out.
