Male hair loss down to the menopause?
Published: 26th of August 2010
A scientist has proclaimed that male hair loss may be due to a hormonal stage likened to the menopause.Robert Brannigan, MD, urologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said that masculine hypogonadism - a decline in the rate of testosterone - can lead to many symptoms, including hair loss, weight gain and mood swings.
The researcher went on to note that he estimates some 95 per cent of this "highly prevalent disorder" go undiagnosed and therefore untreated, which can result in affected men feeling helpless and depressed.
He claimed that the condition is closely linked to infertility issues, as well as diabetes and cholesterol problems.
"It's important that men pay attention to their body and openly discuss symptoms with their physician in order to prevent overlooking the cause," Dr Brannigan added.
Female menopause is also known to result in hair loss as well, with many women finding that their rate of thinning accelerates rapidly after they hit this stage and continues to do so once they are in the post-menopause period.
