Female hair loss 'more traumatic'
Published: 20th of August 2010
Women have a more difficult time dealing with hair loss due to society's expectations.According to Today's THV, while men can shed strands at a rapid rate and still be respected, "for women, even a slight amount of loss is not acceptable".
As such, it can be a very stressful situation for ladies, as natural and inevitable hormonal processes such as menopause can lead to thinning tresses and even baldness, while autoimmune disease alopecia areata can strike anyone at any time.
Dr Edmond Griffin, a dermatologist, pointed out that there are a host of issues which can result in female hair loss - whether these are conditions such as the above, genetics, thyroid problems or medications.
However, the problem with this is that each requires different treatment and therefore getting the best combination of medications can be difficult.
Despite this, men may be in luck - according to a piece in the Sydney Morning Herald, shaven heads are the latest trend.
