Alopecia athlete determined to raise awareness
Published: 16th of August 2010
A young athlete with female hair loss has spoken out about her determination to raise awareness about alopecia.Abby Ter Haar, aged 17, told the Advocate that her bald head - as she refuses to wear a wig - may have helped her gain enough confidence to improve her leadership skills from an early age.
The teenager was diagnosed with alopecia at age six, losing some 70 per cent of her locks within weeks.
Finding it difficult at first, Abby had to suffer children and "even adults" making comments to her face - but now claims she does not mind.
"The most common thing I get now is people who want to talk about cancer, thinking I have cancer. It's a little awkward, but it gives me a chance to explain my story," she added, noting that her entire family began learning as much as they could about the condition as soon as she was confirmed to have it, with her father now running a national charity for alopecia.
The syndrome can affect anybody at any time and is rooted in different causes, although one is traction alopecia - overstyling pulling the tresses out - which could be affecting singer Alesha Dixon, judging by photographs published in the Daily Mail recently.
