Hair loss camp 'will tackle psychological effects'
Published: 30th of July 2010
People from all over Britain who suffer from hair loss have the opportunity to attend a special camp today (July 30th).The event, to be held in Scarborough as a result of the partnership between the Bebold Support Group and Alopecia Awareness, is designed to tackle the psychological effects of a condition which is too often dismissed as medical, according to one of the attendees.
Janice Broadhurst, from York, told the BBC she had lost her hair "virtually overnight" and felt its disappearance "like a bereavement".
"Your hair is so much a part of you and how you look. Losing my hair had an enormous impact on my own self esteem," she said.
This may tie into a recent article in Slate magazine, which advised philanthropists to volunteer for hair loss charities as the need for such help is often underestimated.
Ms Broadhurst added that she expected to be inspired by youngsters who attended the exhibition, as she felt the pain of hair loss keenly enough as an adult.
