Hair loss: Compulsive hair pullers speak out
Published: 16th of July 2010
A Channel 4 documentary has investigated the plight of three women who suffer from trichotillomania.Girls on the Pull - on TV tonight (July 16th) - was featured by Metro as its Pick of the Day for its insight into the obsessive compulsive disorder that compels sufferers to pluck the hairs out of their own heads.
People with severe trichotillomania may pull so much that they leave whole bald patches, which the reviewer described as “squeamish viewingâ€.
The women also spoke of how difficult it is for people without the condition to understand their compulsion.
One trichotillomania sufferer, Laura Forbes, recently talked to the Daily Mail about her condition.
“My hand would wander up to my hair, my brain would zone out and, before I knew it, there would be huge bunches of hair around me,†she said.
She added that hypnotherapy has helped her to regain a degree of control over her compulsion, though she still pulls out about ten of her hairs every day.
