Trichotillomania urge is "suffocating"
Published: 15th of July 2010
A girl who suffers from trichotillomania - the compulsion to yank strands from their heads, causing female hair loss - has admitted that sometimes the urge is "suffocating".Speaking to the Daily Mail, Laura Forbes - who began pulling at her locks aged 14 while on a family holiday - explained that she had an unquenchable thirst for the habit for the next 14 years.
"My hand would wander up to my hair, my brain would zone out and, before I knew it, there would be huge bunches of hair around me," she noted.
Although she saw doctors, Ms Forbes found it difficult to break the vicious circle which saw her creating bald patches in her parting and at her roots, resorting to hiding the damage with hair accessories such as scarves.
However, she has finally found a solution in the form of hypnotherapy and, although she has not kicked the habit entirely, she is down to pulling out ten hairs a day as opposed to the handfuls it was previously.
Meanwhile, a group of scientists think they have isolated a gene which could cause alopecia.
