Writers: We are not our hair
Published: 12th of July 2010
A pair of writers has detailed how society's obsession with the perfect tresses can lead to self-esteem worries and even female hair loss.In a piece for Women24, Ntombi Mbadlanyana and Abigail Jacobs-Williams pointed out that having the coolest and most flattering hairstyle is paramount in many industries and social circles, even when such a 'do is unnatural or painful to achieve.
This is particularly true for black women, they continued, noting that the chemical straightening and relaxing movements, as well as the concept of a weave, can permanently damage locks and - in some cases - lead to "an early and severe case of alopecia", such as in that of supermodel Naomi Campbell.
The legendary clotheshorse was spotted out recently with bald patches at her temples, thought to have been caused by a too-tight weave.
Referencing the India.Arie song I Am Not My Hair, the bloggers went on to observe that if less pressure was placed on women to achieve the perfect 'do, locks everywhere might be in better condition.
