Male hair loss 'shouldn't be the butt of mean jokes'
Published: 6th of July 2010
A man who has suffered from male hair loss for some time has bemoaned the lack of understanding of the condition in some social circles.Writing an opinion piece for the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, Dick Sparrer noted that while cruel comments on a person's appearance seem to be off-limits in most interactions, too many people apparently think that mocking baldness is acceptable.
"You could be a topic of someone's conversation ... [if you] lose a little hair - OK, maybe a lot of hair - and people you barely know feel quite comfortable cracking those insensitive bald jokes," he observed.
Mr Sparrer stated that it was unfair and mean-spirited to poke fun or to point out problems such as this, noting that this is the truth whether between acquaintances, close friends or even family.
Meanwhile, Texas beauty queen winner Kayla Martell told StyleList recently that people need to be reminded that those suffering with alopecia are just normal people and should not be treated differently.
