Alopecia sufferer: Losing my hair was traumatic
Published: 5th of July 2010
For some, female hair loss might be extremely traumatic - and one alopecia sufferer has described the illness as "like a bereavement".Speaking to the Western Mail, Anna Proctor explained that when she first realised her locks were falling out, it felt as though she had been slapped.
Having been at the pool, the now 60-year-old was shocked to discover a huge bald patch and, although she immediately visited the doctor, within 12 months her eyelashes, eyebrows and every strand of hair on her head had disappeared.
"As the months went on more and more hair fell out, I felt ashamed and humiliated," Ms Proctor said.
However, when she found a good wig supplier and began coming to terms with her condition, the businesswoman started to feel liberated by her hair loss.
Although she wears a hairpiece when at work or out shopping, the photographer goes bald at home and while swimming.
"I've lost my hair, so what? Life goes on. It's taken me a long time to get where I am now but I'm finally in the driving seat," she concluded.
Meanwhile, an article on Helium recently stated that malnutrition could be behind thinning tresses.
