Hair loss sufferers are "just normal people"
Published: 1st of July 2010
A woman has spoken out to dispel some of the myths that surround hair loss.Texas beauty queen winner Kayla Martell told StyleList that individuals with alopecia are "just normal people without hair".
The 21-year-old, who recently took the Miss Delaware crown before appearing bald on the CBS Early Show, added that the medical condition simply makes sufferers allergic to their locks.
She added: "It is also important to understand the stigma associated with baldness and the emotional stress that comes from the unpredictable nature of the hair loss."
Ms Martell first began experiencing a thinning of her tresses when she was just ten and it gradually got worse.
According to the NHS, around one in 100 people develop alopecia areata and it is more common among teenagers and young adults.
In its more serious cases, the autoimmune disease - which causes the body to attack its own follicles - can result in complete baldness.
