'Silent disease' can result in hair loss

Published: 25th of June 2010
`Silent disease` can result in hair loss A medical condition referred to by a news provider as a 'silent disease' can result in hair loss.

Commenting on the issue of thyroid-related problems, the Times of India noted that many of the symptoms patients experience are initially mild and most people tend to ignore them.

However, if left untreated, they can progress and lead to further complications, it noted.

The publication stated that hypothyroidism can cause dry skin, a falling out of tresses, weight gain, fatigue, puffy eyes and high cholesterol.

If left untreated for a while, it can go on to cause anaemia, low body temperature and heart failure, according to Dr S Shukla of the Ursala Horsman Memorial Hospital.

Many doctors believe that even people with mild symptoms should go for annual checkups so their treatment is well managed.

As well as thyroid problems, a lack of protein in diets can weaken locks and make them more likely to fall out.
