Middle-aged men 'may experience hair loss due to hormone changes'
Published: 22nd of June 2010
While hormone changes in middle-age are typically associated with women, men are not immune either. This is according to research published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine, which suggested that some males experience a fall in hormone levels at this stage of their life, the Daily Mail reports.
Among the symptoms of such alterations can be hair loss, hot flushes and weight gain.
Responding to the findings, Dr Thomas Ulahannan, consultant endocrinologist at Gloucester Royal Infirmary, said: "This new research establishes that it's really worth testing the testosterone levels of men over 40 who have these types of symptoms."
However, he added that it is important not to "over-egg the problem", as it is probably only around two per cent of males over the age of 40 who suffer from it.
Hair loss in men can also be triggered by genetic factors, stress, smoking and poor diets, among other things.
