Hair loss sufferers 'likely to benefit from research'
Published: 22nd of June 2010
People who suffer from hair loss are likely to benefit from advances being made in medical research. This is according to Dr Dan Rutherford, who suggested in the Daily Telegraph that steps forward concerning the understanding of the immune system are occurring and it is likely alopecia patients will see improvements in their diagnoses and care as a result.
He made his comments in response to a letter sent in by a reader who noted that she is 33 and suffers from alopecia areata.
The individual stated that the problem came about while she was on a detox which meant she could have no alcohol, processed meat, wheat or dairy.
She asked whether the changes to her eating and drinking could have triggered the problem.
Dr Rutherford suggested this was unlikely and the onset on the hair loss was probably coincidental.
According to the NHS, around one in 100 people suffer from alopecia areata and it is most common among teenagers and young adults.
