Published: 17th of June 2010
A woman in the US has been doing her bit to help victims of hair loss.Dee Toohey has been donating her locks to those who lack their own tresses since 1968, the Seminole Chronicle reports.
She gives the hair to Locks of Love, which helps those suffering from conditions such as alopecia.
According to the NHS, around one in 100 people develop alopecia areata, with the problem being most prevalent in teenagers and young adults.
Ms Tooney donated 18 inches to the charity. It had taken her nearly two years to grow it.
Commenting on the moment she was first inspired to take part in such activity, she said: "I passed this lady who told me I should donate my hair."
A number of her family members have also made donations over the years, including her brother and young granddaughter.
She noted: "They accept your hair if it is coloured, as long as it is not damaged."
