Hair loss 'can be a sign of underlying health problems'
Published: 14th of June 2010
As well as having an impact on the appearance of sufferers, hair loss may be a sign of underlying health problems. This is the claim of Dr Holly Phillips, who noted on The Early Show on CBS News that people may need medical attention if their tresses fall out, the Times of India reports.
The expert stated that if individuals' locks become dry and brittle they may have an iron deficiency.
Meanwhile, the sudden loss of tresses can be a sign they are under too much stress, she noted.
In addition, if the hair on their eyebrows becomes thinner, they may have low levels of thyroid hormone.
Located in the neck, the thyroid is a gland that produces hormones and when it is not working properly, people can experience a range of symptoms, including weight fluctuations, tiredness and blood pressure issues.
People who suffer any such symptoms, or other problems, should seek medical help as soon as possible, Dr Phillips recommended.
