Protein modification 'could cause hair loss'

Published: 14th of June 2010
Protein modification `could cause hair loss` A common form of modification to a protein could result in hair loss in some cases, new research suggests.

Conducted by Taiwanese scientists, the study found that defective palmitoylation can cause a range of symptoms, including a thinning of tresses and osteoporosis.

Observing the impact of the problem on mice, the team also found the condition can lead to premature deaths.

The analysis was headed by Chen Yuan-tsong from the Academia Sinica's Institute of Biomedical Sciences, along with research fellow Jeffrey Yen.

It was published in the international scientific journal PLoS Genetics.

In a statement about their results, the experts noted: "The elucidation of these proteins would be an exciting first step to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying human alopecia, osteoporosis and many neurodegenerative diseases."

Other causes of hair loss include genes, stress, poor diets and traumatic medical events.

Those keen to minimise their risk of suffering from the condition may wish to ensure they have sufficient levels of protein in their diets.
