Hormone imbalances 'can lead to hair loss'
Published: 9th of June 2010
Women who begin to suffer hair loss in later life may well do so due to an imbalance of hormones, it has been claimed.Writing in the Athens Banner-Herald in response to a reader's question, medical experts Mehmet Oz and Mike Roizen said fluctuating levels of such chemicals can result in a number of symptoms, including hot flushes and a thinning of tresses.
They were giving advice to a 68-year-old who described herself as very active.
However, the individual said that her hair was falling out rapidly.
As well as hormone issues, there are other things that could be behind the problem, it was noted.
For example, iron or protein deficiencies can have this effect.
Meanwhile, stress can also be a cause of balding, the medics noted.
The most common cause of hair loss in the UK is androgenic alopecia, which is also referred to as male-pattern baldness.
Despite its name, this can be suffered by both men and women.
