Hair loss 'can have many causes'

Published: 2nd of June 2010
Hair loss `can have many causes` There are many potential causes of hair loss, it has been noted.

A report in the Times of India points out that eating disorders can be one such trigger.

It remarked: "The growing phase of the hair cycle is prematurely halted by reduced food intake. Hair loses its shine and falls out."

In addition, those who lose weight rapidly for other reasons may also suffer problems with the health of their tresses, it noted.

Meanwhile, thyroid issues can cause locks to be shed as too much or too little of the hormone produced by the gland affects the hair growth cycle.

Stress was also cited as one possible factor in people losing their tresses.

One person who believes she was in this position is celebrity Gail Porter, who developed alopecia five years ago but is now recovering from the problem.

According to the news source, going bald can have an impact on people's mental wellbeing.

It said: "Hair loss can have a profound effect on self-esteem, triggering depression and so, ironically, hindering recovery."
