Hair loss in women 'can be caused by traction alopecia'

Published: 28th of May 2010
Hair loss in women `can be caused by traction alopecia` Women can suffer hair loss due to traction alopecia, it has been pointed out.

Commenting on the subject, Dr Joshua Fox said that it is possible to reduce the chances of this happening by observing some practices.

For example, people should not put their tresses in tight braids, cornrows or weaves on a regular basis.

She remarked: "Ironically, the very hair care and styling practices designed to improve their appearance can actually cause young girls and women to lose their hair and feel that they no longer look as good."

Dr Fox went on to say that if it is identified early, traction alopecia can be reversed.

However, if it is not diagnosed quickly, it can cause irreversible damage, she added.

Another form of hair loss people can suffer is referred to as alopecia areata.

According to the NHS, this affects around one in 100 individuals and is most common among teenagers and young adults.
