Men 'may be disturbed by hair loss'
Published: 27th of May 2010
Hair loss among males can have a detrimental impact on their mental wellbeing, it has been noted.According to psychologist Sara Chatwin, locks are closely aligned with many masculine characteristics.
For this reason, when they begin balding, males can suffer from significant losses of self-esteem.
She made her comments in response to a survey conducted by Head & Shoulders in New Zealand, which found that 26 per cent of respondents were concerned about losing their tresses.
Ms Chatwin stated: "Many men define themselves by the way they wear their hair. This may be due to traditional beliefs that suggest hair is associated with virility, social status, strength and youth."
The poll also found that 47 per cent of Kiwi women thought men with a full head of hair are generally more attractive than their balding counterparts.
One way in which men can try to reduce their chances of suffering from thinning locks is to ensure they have sufficient levels of protein in their diets.
