Young male hair loss sufferers 'may benefit from seeing a doctor'
Published: 27th of May 2010
While there is usually no serious underlying health issues when young men suffer from hair loss, it may be worth having a medical check-up.This is according to Dr Rhonda Patt, who said healthcare providers can rule out any problems.
She made her comments in the Charlotte Observer in response to concerns raised by a reader, who noted that her 20-year-old son is already balding.
The mother revealed she was worried because he seemed too young for this to be happening.
Dr Patt stated that the most common cause of baldness is androgenic alopecia, which is also known as male-pattern baldness.
Despite its name, women can suffer from this condition too.
The doctor went on to suggest that other possible reasons why people can lose their locks include thyroid issues, fungal infections, steroid use and vitamin deficiencies.
There are treatments for these problems that can help restore tresses and tackling them early is beneficial, she added.
