Post-child birth hair loss 'may be caused by thyroid'
Published: 26th of May 2010
Some women find they experience hair loss after giving birth to children and this can be the result of a gland located in the neck.Among a number of such people, it is problems with the thyroid that results in their tresses being shed.
There are two types of thyroid disorder, one of which is referred to as hypothyroidism.
This means a lack of thyroxin is produced and other symptoms can include tiredness and weight gain.
Another form of the problem is hyperthyroidism, in which too much of the hormone is secreted.
Commenting on the issue, consultant endocrinologist Dr Chia Su-Ynn said there is a lack of awareness among patients concerning thyroid disorders.
She remarked: "The symptoms may be mistaken for a lot of other conditions like obesity, depression, anxiety or other stress-related symptoms."
In addition to thyroid malfunctions, women can suffer the loss of their locks as a result of their genes, poor nutrition and stress, among other things.
