Gene variant that contributes to female hair loss discovered
Published: 24th of May 2010
Scientists have identified a gene that they say increases women's risk of suffering from hair loss.According to a team from the University of Melbourne and St Vincent's Hospital, females with a variant of the oestrogen receptor beta gene - referred to as ESR2 - were more likely to experience the problem.
The variant's link to a thinning of tresses was particularly strong among individuals aged over 40 and the gene seemed to make hair follicles more sensitive to oestrogen levels in the body.
On the other hand, women not suffering from a shedding of their locks exhibited a different variant of the same gene that was less affected by the hormone.
As well as genes and hormone levels, there are many things that can contribute to hair loss risks.
Stress, medical traumas, poor diets and excessive consumption of alcohol are among these factors, as is the styling of tresses in a way that puts strain on the follicles.
