Unusual diet 'led to health risks including hair loss'
Published: 21st of May 2010
A woman who consumed an unusual diet for a period of several months put her health at serious risk and damaged her locks, contributing to the chance of hair loss. The lady, who was 88 and lives in the US, ate between two and three pounds of raw bok choy a day, believing this would help her control her diabetes, AOL Health reports.
Eventually, she was rushed to the emergency room of New York University's hospital by her family after she became lethargic and lost her ability to swallow.
Medics discovered she was suffering from extreme hypothyroidism.
The condition can lead to a range of symptoms, including hair loss, weight gain, muscle aches and fatigue.
So serious was the woman's case that she fell into a coma and had to be admitted to intensive care.
It is thought that an enzyme in the bok choy decreased her uptake of iodine into the thyroid - which is necessary for the production of thyroxine.
