Hair loss warning issued over products
Published: 20th of May 2010
Using products designed to relax their hair can cause tresses to fall out, it has been noted.Research conducted by Nhlanhla Khumalo from the University of Cape Town suggested that there is a link between chemical relaxers and hair loss, Sowetan reports.
Indeed, using the substances on children and younger women can lead to complete baldness, she claimed.
People are at a higher risk of suffering a thinning of their locks if they put their hair into certain styles after using the products, Ms Khumalo said.
She advised: "If you do use hair relaxers, stay away from braids and extensions which will add more weight to the hair - or else go natural."
These chemicals change the level of cystine which is present in tresses. This is responsible for strengthening the strands.
There are many factors other than this that can lead to a heightened risk of hair being shed.
For example, a poor diet can put individuals at a greater risk of losing their locks.
