Low thyroid function 'can cause hair loss'
Published: 20th of May 2010
One of the possible symptoms of low thyroid function is hair loss, it has been noted.Writing into the Tuscaloosa News, an unnamed reader said that he had suffered from fatigue, dry skin, vertigo and "brain fog", in addition to a thinning of his tresses, for a number of decades.
Recently, a doctor put him on new medication, which he claimed has helped him.
According to the patient, evidence of his condition went away.
Responding to his comments, medical experts Joe and Teresa Graedon suggested his symptoms are classic for thyroid function problems.
Also known as hypothyroidism, the complaint is caused because the gland does not produce sufficient levels of thyroxine.
This hormone controls the body's growth and metabolism.
As well as the symptoms the reader described, it can result in weight gain and muscle aches.
While the problem can occur in anyone, it is more common among women.
