Mother notes concerns over daughter's hair loss
Published: 17th of May 2010
A mother has revealed she is concerned over the fact that her young daughter appears to be suffering from hair loss.Writing into the Irish Times, the individual revealed that her five-year-old seems to be tugging at her tresses a lot and there are now small bald patches on her scalp.
Responding to the problem, Marrion Kerr said it could be a condition called trichotillomania, which involves the repeated pulling or twisting of the hair until it breaks off.
This is more common among women than men, she noted, suggesting it affects up to four per cent of the population.
She added: "Trichotillomania sufferers may also pluck other hairy areas, such as the eyebrows, eyelashes, or body hair."
Ms Kerr went on to state that the denial of pulling out hair is not uncommon among those who have the problem.
In addition, the condition is associated with other self-injury in some cases, she claimed.
According to the NHS, while the causes of trichotillomania are unknown, it is thought to be an impulse control disorder.
