Warning issued over hair loss caused by products
Published: 17th of May 2010
A warning has been issued concerning certain products people use on their locks that may result in hair loss.According to new research from a team at the University of Cape Town, hair relaxants can lead to a number of problems with tresses.
The work, which was led by Professor Dr Nonhlanhla Khumalo and was published in the March issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatologists, noted that such products can result in a "rash of embarrassing hair and scalp conditions, including hair loss, especially when combined with extensions, weaves or braids".
According to the scientists, individuals who put this on their locks have elevated levels of cystine, which can lead to fragile and brittle tresses.
Dr Khumalo advised consumers to stop using relaxants or at least limit them.
Other ways in which people can reduce their risk of suffering hair loss include ensuring there is sufficient protein in their diets and avoiding drinking too much alcohol.
