Thyroid diseases 'can lead to hair loss'
Published: 14th of May 2010
There are a range of symptoms associated with thyroid disease and one of them is hair loss.Commenting on the issue, medical expert Dr Uday Phadke noted that women who experience problems with the gland can witness a thinning of their tresses as a result.
Other possible side effects include irritability, insomnia, weight gain, weakness and hives.
According to the doctor, some people may have problems with their thyroids and not be aware of it.
He commented: "Though treatable, a thyroid disease is elusive as only half the people suffering from this problem know about it."
Dr Phadke went on to claim that some of the symptoms can be confused with depression, stress and the menopause.
As well as thyroid conditions, hair loss can be triggered by a range of other factors, including poor diet, genes, stress and traumatic medical events.
Additionally, a proportion of women shed some of their tresses following child birth.
