Hair loss 'increasingly common among women'
Published: 11th of May 2010
Hair loss is rising in prevalence among women in Britain, it has been suggested.According to Dr Peter Williams from The Hospital group, receding hair lines and thinning tresses are problems he sees increasingly often in female patients, the Daily Mail reports.
He cited stress and low oestrogen as possible causes.
This hormonal imbalance is particularly likely to occur when women are going through the menopause.
Meanwhile, Dr Matthew Harries from the University of Manchester noted that environmental factors may also be playing a part in the trend.
He pointed to frontal fibrosing alopecia, which has emerged as a new type of hair loss and involves the immune system attacking the follicles.
A warning sign for this particular condition is locks becoming frail and wispy, as well as the emergence of bald patches.
Women who begin shedding their locks may wish to go and seek the medical opinion of a doctor in case there is an underlying health issue such as a thyroid problem that is causing the loss.
