Young hair loss sufferer in the spotlight
Published: 27th of April 2010
A young hair loss sufferer was recently the focus of attention among sports fans in her local town.Over the weekend, Sophie Nixon led out Lowestoft Town FC on to the field before a game, the Lowestoft Journal reports.
The 13-year-old has received media attention recently after it emerged that her tresses had been falling out in clumps due to the stress she was suffering at the hands of bullies.
Commenting on her daughter's passion for the local football team and the support provided by the club, mother Helen Nixon said: "I'm speaking from the heart when I say that the chairman, coaches, players and supporters have been a rock to Sophie."
The teenager is now recovering from her stress-related alopecia.
According to the NHS, the most common form of hair loss among people of Sophie's age is alopecial areata, which affects around one in 100 people.
Some of those with the condition go on to suffer alopecia totalis, which means they have no locks on their scalps, or alopecia universalis - a total loss of tresses from the scalp and body.
