Stress 'can cause hair loss'
Published: 23rd of April 2010
One of the factors that can lead to a thinning of people's locks is stress, it has been pointed out.Writing for CBS News, medical correspondent Dr Jennifer Ashton cited comments made by the Mayo Clinic that the fall of tresses can be related to this.
She noted that the most comment type of stress-induced hair loss is telogen effluvium.
The expert said: "In this condition, emotional or physical stress related to a death in the family, pregnancy, severe weight loss or surgery, for example, pushes large numbers of growing hairs into a resting phase."
Within a few months, the affected hairs may suddenly fall out when individuals engage in normal tasks such as washing or brushing their locks.
Typically, sufferers' hair grows back once the problem causing worry is resolved, although this could take months.
Meanwhile, for some people, intense stress can trigger alopecia areata.
One high-profile person to have gone through this is TV presenter Gail Porter, although after five years with the condition, her tresses are now beginning to reappear.
