Certain hairstyles 'can cause hair loss'
Published: 22nd of April 2010
A warning has been issued to women concerning certain hairstyles which may affect the health of tresses.According to Tiffany Masiello-Helt, braids and extensions are two examples of things that can result in hair loss, Afro American reports.
She remarked: "So many ... women tend to put braids, tracks or weaves in [their hair] to compensate for hair loss and all that does is actually make the problem worse by ripping out their existing hair."
The expert, who has been in the industry for 20 years, went on to note that proper nutrition and diet can help improve the health of locks and thus reduce the risk that they will fall out.
However, there is also a genetic factor involved in balding in the case of some individuals, Ms Masiello-Helt said.
Women who have extensions were recently advised to be careful as they can cause traction alopecia if they are overused or are not put in correctly.
