Hair loss 'particularly hard for women'
Published: 22nd of April 2010
While no one wants to experience hair loss, the condition can be especially hard for women to deal with. This is according to Ariel Hansen, who suggested in the Sun-Sentinel that while a lot of balding men shave their heads and "wear their hairlessness ... proudly", it is more difficult for females.
She noted that children can sometimes stare and adults tend to look in the other direction when they see a woman with thinning hair.
The writer went on to draw attention to the case of Krista Gehrke, whose hair fell out when she was 18 months old.
She stated: "Getting ready in the mirror in the morning every morning was always a struggle."
Ms Gehrke, who is now a mother, also noted that hormones can have an effect on locks.
Her tresses thickened when she became pregnant, but they fell out again once she stopped breast feeding.
As well as hormones, stress, medical traumas, genes and poor diets can all result in hair loss.
