Hair loss 'helped girl make friends'
Published: 21st of April 2010
A woman who has suffered from hair loss since childhood has revealed that the condition helped her make friends.Shaylah Giordimaina developed alopecia areata at the age of seven and has been living with it ever since.
The gutsy woman, who is now a dance teacher, said she did not let the problem impact on her ability to meet people.
She said: "Making friends was never a difficult task as my shiny little head was a brilliant conversation starter."
However, Ms Giordimaina conceded that her first day at school was nerve racking.
She and all her fellow pupils were told to take their hats off and she remembers hearing a gasp as she removed the article from her head.
However, a girl next to her patted her and said "you're alright" and broke the awkwardness.
According to the NHS, alopecia areata affects around one in 100 people in the UK and it is most common among teenagers and young adults.
